Congratulations to @studiosaar.design who have been shortlisted for @dezeen Emerging Architect of the Year.
We’re proud to have been involved in one of Studio Saar’s recent projects, the ‘Apartment Store’ - a re-imagining of the former Debenhams store in Taunton. @studiosaar.design and @landstory looked at transforming the Art Deco building from a retail space to a living, working, social hub. 7 years ago Natalie and her young daughter were made homeless: “it was a really dark moment...”I’ve never felt so alone”

A call from @sheltercharity changed everything.

“It was like someone putting a massive warm blanket around me and saying ‘it’s ok, we’ve got you. You’re not alone and we will be there beside you every step of the way’.”

Today Natalie and her daughter have a secure home: “it’s worth living, it’s worth being alive”

Today is World Homelessness Day - a day to reflect on the urgent need for change and the realities faced by those experiencing homelessness.

The figures are shocking- recent Shelter research found that 1 in 78 children are growing up homeless in England.

Behind every stat is a story like Natalie’s.

As a country we need to create a future where everyone has a safe place to call home.

Thank you for all the lovely comments about our lectern in last week’s post….so we thought we’d share more about the inspiration behind them, initial sketches and the four finished pieces that featured in our ‘People’s Manifesto campaign for @sheltercharity - they’re such works of art!
The lecterns were our Creative Director, @mattgcole’s idea and formed part of our initial pitch to @sheltercharity. Here, Matt talks through the significance of the lecterns:

‘Politicians have a history of saying a lot but doing very little especially when it has come to homelessness. The idea of lampooning the hypocrisy of successive Prime Ministers each having bespoke lecterns designed at great expense from behind which they deliver empty promises seemed like an appropriate, visual anchor point and adds a bit of wit, to a film which is asking regular people to take action where politicians have failed. The fact that these lecterns appear in rather incongruous situations where our protagonists are really just going about their daily lives while taking action against homelessness serves to highlight the pomposity and ineffectuality of Government. Basically we’re saying “look we can have lecterns too but, unlike you, we’re going to get stuff done”.’

For @sheltercharity’s ‘The People’s Manifest

For @sheltercharity’s ‘The People’s Manifesto’ campaign we commissioned @charlotteaustenstudios, an incredibly talented prop-maker to make us 4 lecterns.
These were made from wood, second hand objects, carved recycled foam, Jesmonite and scenic paint effects.

Charlotte explains the process: “We used one lectern reference for all, @rainybeck then adapted the design for each lectern for each character through a process of drawing and research. We built the lecterns in Frome. The swimmer lectern was carved by hand and covered in stone resin with the same scenic paint effect.

The swimmer lectern has now found a new home in @shelterbrighton’s shop. Have you spotted it?!

Congratulations to @flyingseagulluk for being shortlisted in this year’s Children & Young People Now Awards!
We were lucky enough to work with the UK Charity a few years ago, using film and photography to help them with various fundraising and awareness campaigns. The Flying Seagulls are a group of experienced clowns who have been working with children living in deprivation worldwide since 2007. Their work demonstrates the incredible power of play - not only physical health and cognitive development but also emotional resilience and building community ties.
